If you currently have only one layer of shingles, by building codes you are allowed two layers. But 5 Star Roofing does not recommended two layers of shingles for the following reasons: more than one layer of shingles makes your roof hotter which could cause premature aging, we aren’t able to adequately inspect your sheathing and we can’t fix what we can’t see, the added weight puts stress on your roof deck, and multiple layers will impact the type of warranty you will have on your new roof. So if you're just trying to save a couple hundred dollars, you may realize the cons aren’t worth the risk.
